Mukono came alive as the 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games I were officially launched in a vibrant ceremony at Seroma Christian High School, setting the tone for one of the largest editions in the competition’s history.
A total of 6,558 athletes have converged to compete across 11 disciplines, underlining the tournament’s growing stature as a premier platform for nurturing school sports talent in Uganda.
Presiding over the opening, Chief Guest Rev. Bishop Hannington Mutebi underscored the transformative power of sport in shaping young people beyond competition.
He highlighted values such as discipline, confidence, and social skills as essential outcomes of participation, while also stressing the health benefits tied to physical activity.
He further urged athletes to seize the opportunity as a stepping stone to greater heights.
Exceptional performance at the national level, he noted, could open doors to regional competitions like FEASSA, continental stages, and even global exposure.
The Commissioner for Physical Education in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Rev. Canon Duncan Mugumya, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to school sports.
He emphasized that the Ball Games are formally embedded within the Ministry’s calendar, urging officials to uphold integrity and professionalism throughout the competition.
The event also drew key stakeholders, including representatives from the National Council of Sports, ASSHU leadership, and head teachers from participating schools, reflecting a unified commitment to advancing school sports.
Hosting institution Seroma Christian High School, through its Resident Director Amelia Kyambadde, extended appreciation to partner institutions that provided critical facilities, including Uganda Christian University, Our Lady of Africa, Seeta University, Seeta High School, and Hilton.
With competition set to unfold over the coming days, the championship promises a compelling showcase of talent, sportsmanship, and unity, as schools from across the country battle for top honours.
