Uganda’s She Cranes delivered a composed and tactical masterclass to defeat Wales 59-50 in their opening preliminary match of the 2026 Commonwealth Games netball competition on Saturday, 25th July.
The She Cranes finished strongly after overturning a half-time deficit, underlining their credentials in a tightly contested Pool B encounter.
Uganda had made a bright start, edging the first quarter 15-13, but Wales responded with resilience to take a 31-28 lead into the break, momentarily shifting momentum in their favour.
The turning point arrived early in the third quarter when head coach Rashid Mubiru rang in decisive changes that altered the rhythm of the game.
Winnie Isoto, Joan Ryekoboth and Nasim Mutesi made way for Margret Bagaala, Mary Nuba and Hanisha Muhammad in a bold tactical reshuffle.
Muhammad’s introduction proved pivotal. Slotting into Goal Keeper, she stabilised the defence, while Shafie Nalwanjja switched to Wing Defence, tightening Uganda’s structure across the court.
The adjustments injected renewed energy and balance, allowing the She Cranes to regain control.
Uganda surged ahead to lead 45-39 by the end of the third quarter before managing the final phase with authority to seal a convincing 59-50 victory.
The result sets a positive tone for Uganda’s campaign as they now turn attention to their next fixtures, facing Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, Jamaica on Monday 27th, and concluding the preliminary stage against New Zealand on Tuesday 28th.
