Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has announced the appointment of Abdallah Mubiru as assistant coach of the Uganda Women Senior National Football team with immediate effect.

Mubiru who bounces back to National teams set up after his tenure as Uganda Cranes interim coach back in 2019-21, has replaced Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi.

“Abdallah Mubiru has been appointed as assistant coach of the Uganda Women Senior National Football team with immediate effect as Ayub Khalifan Kiyingi concentrates on the U-20 team going to camp.

Olive Mbekeka also joins the Crested Cranes as second assistant coach while Stephen Kiggundu is goalkeeper trainer.

The search for the Crested Cranes Head Coach and now the entire Uganda Cranes technical team is on”. Reads FUFA statement.

Mubiru’s first assignment comes against North African giants Algeria in the women’s African Nations Cup qualifiers towards the end of this month.

The Crested Cranes will host Algeria on 20th September 2023 at FUFA Technical Center in Njeru. The return leg will be in Algeria a week later.

Background

On 10th July 2019 FUFA appointed Mubiru as Uganda Cranes interim coach.

The tick-tak tactician replaced the Frenchman Sebastian Desabre who terminated his contract to join Egyptian club Pyramids FC following Uganda’s elimination by Senegal in the African Nations Cup, in Egypt.

However, Mubiru was later sacked in 2021 after failing to guide Uganda to the African Nations Cup.

His last two ties in charge of Cranes that produced a defeat and a draw to Burkina Faso and Malawi respectively, will always inflict painful memories to Ugandan football lovers.

He worked with Livingstone Mbabazi as his immediate assistant.

Their first tie was the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers against Somalia in August 2019.

Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi will now draw his whole concentration on the U-20 Women’s National team which will soon be in camp to prepare for World Cup qualifiers.
