The stage is set for a compelling revival of one of western Uganda’s most celebrated football spectacles, as the Ankole Cup 2026 returns with renewed ambition, broader participation, and heightened anticipation across the region.

Slated to run from June to August—strategically timed during Uganda’s football off-season—the tournament is poised to dominate the sporting landscape, bringing together 13 district teams in what is expected to be a defining social and athletic event.

The competition will officially kick off on Saturday, 6th June at Bushenyi Main Stadium, with an elaborate opening ceremony graced by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, as chief guest.

Fans will be treated to a full afternoon of football action. Traditional rivals St Kaggwa and Nganwa High School will reignite their long-standing contest in the opening curtain-raiser at 1 PM. This will be followed by an entertaining fixture between Members of Parliament and the media at 3 PM, before hosts Bushenyi District face off with Sheema District in the headline Group A clash at 4:30 PM.

Earlier momentum for the tournament was built in Kampala, where organizers, team leaders, and Members of Parliament convened at Kati Kati Restaurant on Monday, 4th May 2026 to affirm their readiness.

“The preparations for a successful Ankole Cup are going aggressively and we would like to thank the members of the organizing committee, team heads and the different members of parliament, district leaders and the media,” said Osborne Mushabe, the chairperson of the organizing committee.

Political leaders, many of whom are directly backing district teams, expressed optimism and commitment ahead of the competition. Among those who addressed the gathering were MPs Hon. Mwine Mpaka, Adrine Katusiime, Jovrine Kaliisa, Lilloan Ruteraho, Peter Agaba, Mercy Kanyesigye and Dan Atwijukire Kimosho.

“The Ankole Cup is here. I thank the organizing committee. It has helped to work on the mindset of many people in the region about football and sports in general,” Hon. Mpaka remarked.

In the build-up to kickoff, an official launch dinner is scheduled for 19th May 2026 at Hotel Africana in Kampala, signaling the formal unveiling of the rebranded tournament.

Structurally, the competition will feature four groups. Group A comprises Bushenyi, Sheema, and Ntungamo districts. Group B includes Kazo, Ibanda, and Kiruhura, while Group C brings together Isingiro, Rwampara, Mbarara City, and Kashari. Group D consists of Buhweju, Rubirizi, and Mitooma districts.

A total of 43 matches will be played across the tournament, spanning the group stages, two-legged quarter-finals and semi-finals, before culminating in the grand finale on Sunday, 16th August 2026 at Kabwohe Stadium.

Each participating district will register a squad of 25 players, with eligibility rules requiring 20 to be native to the district, while allowing five players competing in higher leagues to be included.

Beyond competition, the Ankole Cup continues to embody a broader purpose. It serves as a unifying platform that bridges political and social divides, while offering a vital scouting ground for emerging football talent. Over the years, it has consistently attracted top-tier players, including national team stars and performers from Uganda’s premier division.

If current momentum is anything to go by, the 2026 edition is not merely a tournament—it is shaping up to be a cultural and sporting landmark with lasting impact.
