The Buganda Regional League Secretariat has dismissed claims of a clandestine attempt to reinstate Buikwe Red Stars, following mounting allegations that the relegated side could feature in the 2026/27 season under irregular circumstances.
Buikwe Red Stars, a club associated with area Member of Parliament Hon. Jimmy Kanaabi (Buikwe South Constituency), endured a dismal 2025/26 campaign, finishing 15th out of 16 teams and subsequently dropping to the 4th Division (Province) League—Mabira Group.
They were relegated alongside Kiboga United (13th, 29 points), Manyangwa FC (14th, 27 points), and Super Eagles Lugongwe.
Their relegation was compounded by administrative and logistical shortcomings.
The club forfeited a crucial league fixture against Kiboga United after failing to travel to Ssaza Grounds in Kiboga Town.
Additionally, they did not honour a Uganda Cup tie against Nyendo FC in Masaka.
Both incidents were attributed to internal inefficiencies, including reported financial constraints and the chairperson’s preoccupation with parliamentary election activities.
Amid speculation suggesting a potential backdoor return to the regional league, Buganda Region League Chief Executive Officer Brian Ssejjemba firmly rejected the allegations.
“We relegated four teams and admitted four replacements in accordance with the regulations.
The incoming sides are Wakiso Giants, Mayirye United, Matugga United, and Najja Ujenge Fair,” Ssejjemba stated.
He further clarified that structural adjustments arose following the dissolution of Wakiso Giants FC, which had dropped from the FUFA Big League. As a result, Kiboga United, initially relegated retains its place in the league.
“I therefore refute the allegations regarding Buikwe Red Stars. There is no basis for those claims,” he added.
The Buganda Regional League is scheduled to kick off its 2026/27 season at the end of September, with official fixtures expected to be released between late August and early September.
Despite the Secretariat’s assurances, scrutiny remains over league governance, with stakeholders keenly observing whether procedural integrity will be upheld in the final composition of participating teams.
