In a thrilling conclusion to the sixth edition of the FUFA Women’s Cup, Amus College WFC etched their name in Ugandan women’s football history by clinching their first-ever title.
The Bukedea-based side edged Kawempe Muslim LFC 1-0 in a tightly contested final on Saturday at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.
Dramatic Finish
The decisive moment came just two minutes from full time when Kawempe’s Samali Nakacwa inadvertently turned the ball into her own net under pressure from Amus forward Opisa Shalyne.
This own goal proved to be the winner, sparking wild celebrations from the Amus bench and fans.
A Cagey Affair
The match itself was a closely contested encounter, with chances few and far between.
Both sides cancelled each other out for large portions of the game, and Kawempe’s attempts to inject attacking energy with second-half substitutions failed to break through a solid Amus backline.
Amus came closest to scoring in open play when Tamis Shafiga’s 67th-minute header sailed just over the bar.
Road to Glory
Amus College WFC’s journey to the final was anything but easy.
They began their campaign with a 2-1 away win over Isra Soccer Academy in the Round of 32, followed by a walkover against Asubo Ladies.
They then edged Wakiso Hill WFC 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal and stunned 2023 champions Uganda Martyrs Lubaga with a 4-2 aggregate win in the semifinals, spearheaded by standout performer Opisa Shalyne.
Kawempe Muslim LFC’s Campaign
Kawempe Muslim LFC, on the other hand, had a remarkable run in the tournament, dispatching Royal Dreamers, Makerere University, and defending champions She Corporate before overcoming St Noa Girls SS in the semifinals.
However, they fell just short of claiming the title.
A New Champion Emerges
The FUFA Women’s Cup has a rich history, with past winners including Olila High School WFC (2017), UCU Lady Cardinals (2018), Makerere University WFC (2019), Uganda Martyrs Lubaga (2023), and She Corporate FC (2024).
With Amus College WFC’s victory, they have now joined this exclusive list of champions.
Ceremony and Tradition
Adding a symbolic touch to the occasion, last year’s winning captain Aminah Nakato of She Corporate FC carried the trophy onto the pitch before halftime and after full time, passing the torch to a new champion and reinforcing the tradition of honour within the women’s game.
