Shafiq Ssegirinya delivered a moment of precision as Greenlight Islamic Secondary School–Nansana edged Aringa Secondary School 1-0 to secure a coveted place in the round of 32 at the ongoing Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) National Boys Football Championship in Lira.
In a tightly contested Group K encounter, Ssegirinya’s solitary effort proved decisive, underlining his growing influence in Greenlight’s attacking line.
The victory not only sealed progression but also elevated the Wakiso-based side to the summit of the group standings with a perfect return of six points from two matches.
Greenlight’s campaign has been defined by both attacking flair and defensive discipline.
They announced their arrival in emphatic fashion with a commanding 5-1 triumph over Dr. Obote College in their opening fixture, before grinding out a crucial win against Aringa to maintain momentum.
For Aringa Secondary School, the defeat marked a bitter end to their knockout ambitions.
Having earlier fallen 1-0 to St. Joseph’s Buyaga of Bulambuli, their second successive loss leaves them rooted at the bottom of the group with no path to progression.
Attention now shifts to a high-stakes final group clash between Greenlight Islamic and St. Joseph’s Buyaga, a fixture that will determine the Group K leader.
Both sides are level on six points, though Greenlight currently holds the advantage courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Elsewhere in the group, Aringa Secondary School will face Dr. Obote College in a consolation encounter, with pride the only prize at stake.
The championship, which kicked off on May 10, will culminate on May 19 at Lira Town College Playground.
The top four teams will earn the honour of representing Uganda at the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games slated for August in Morogoro, Tanzania.
