SC Villa marked their return to competitive action following the death of captain David Owori with a commanding 3–1 victory over Maroons FC under the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo floodlights on Tuesday, securing their place in the semi-finals of the FUFA Super 8 tournament.
The quarter-final second leg had been postponed to allow the club to observe the mourning and burial period of Owori, who was murdered last week.
Before kick-off, a one-minute moment of silence was observed in honour of the fallen SC Villa captain, David Owori.
With emotions still raw, the Jogoo produced a composed performance to overturn Maroons and advance to the last four.
Frank Ssebuufu set SC Villa on their way in the seventh minute, before Najib Yiga doubled the advantage in the 37th minute to give the hosts a commanding lead at the interval.
Substitute Andrew Otim added a third in the 64th minute, putting the tie beyond Maroons’ reach.
Marvin Orshaba scored a consolation for Maroons deep into stoppage time, pulling one back in the 90+3rd minute, but it was too late to alter the outcome.
To celebrate his life and career, another one-minute silence was observed.
At the 15th minute, a one-minute applause was held to honour his shirt number, 15.
SC Villa will now face NEC FC in the final semi-final on Friday, 14 August, at 7:00pm under the Hamz Stadium floodlights, with the winner booking a place in the final against KCCA FC.
NEC secured their semi-final berth after eliminating UPPC 3–2 on aggregate. The Army side won the return leg 2–1, with Richard Basangwa scoring both goals to send NEC through.
The other semi-final has already been settled, with KCCA FC defeating Kitara FC 1–0 on Monday, 10 August, to reach the final.
Saidi Mayanja struck inside the opening minute after capitalising on a defensive lapse by Kitara defender Benjamin Nyakojo. The early breakthrough proved decisive as KCCA held firm to preserve their advantage until the final whistle.
The FUFA Super 8 final is scheduled for Wednesday, 19 August, with KCCA FC awaiting the winner of Friday’s showdown between SC Villa and NEC FC.
For SC Villa, however, Friday’s semi-final will carry significance beyond the pursuit of silverware: it will be another chapter in the club’s effort to honour the memory of their fallen captain, David Owori.
