As the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) approaches the end of its current term, the political arena is abuzz with speculation about the upcoming elective assembly, scheduled for early 2026.
Current president and Kampala Central parliamentary aspirant Moses Muhangi, who secured his second term on January 18, 2022, is weighing his options for a third consecutive term.
When asked about his intentions, Muhangi said, “We have a guiding constitution, and as per the constitution, my current term will expire in February 2026.
All the powers are in the assembly to decide if I come back or not. I’m in consultation with my team and other stakeholders.
If they feel I have done well and have more to offer, I will take on the podium again.
If stakeholders feel it’s my time up, I will leave to venture into other things, but, I personally feel there is a lot to accomplish.”
Muhangi’s eight-year tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including a remarkable increase in registered boxers from 110 to 1,900 and schools participating in boxing championships from six to 27 despite unthoughtful ban of the sport in schools sports by the authority.
His administration has introduced the Boxing Champions League, a signature brand that has attracted corporate sponsorship and improved the sport’s reputation.
Uganda Boxing has regained international recognition from the International Boxing Federation (IBA) and the African Boxing Union (ABU) as the sole national sport regulator.
Additionally, Muhangi’s regime has secured land for a national gym and training centers from the central government and Buganda Kingdom, focusing on grassroots development and youth empowerment.
However, his administration has faced challenges, including unresolved funding issues, financial struggles, and leadership disputes.
The lack of adequate training facilities and equipment has hindered boxer development, and Muhangi has faced opposition and court battles throughout his tenure.
The elective assembly will determine the future of Ugandan boxing, with Muhangi’s decision to seek re-election hanging in the balance.
