Uganda’s welterweight contender Batte Nuhu has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Commonwealth Games following a hard-fought 3:2 split decision victory over India’s Yadav Pratap in Glasgow, Scotland.
The win marks Batte’s second successive triumph at the Games, underlining his growing confidence and tactical maturity on the big stage.
He had earlier announced his arrival with authority in the Round of 32, dispatching Nigeria’s Abdulwahab Abdulramon via a dominant unanimous 5–0 decision.
Batte combined ring intelligence with physical advantages, particularly his reach and lateral movement to control exchanges across all three rounds.
Despite an early scare, he recalibrated effectively, dictating tempo and outworking his opponent to earn convincing scorecards (29–26, 28–27, 29–26, 28–27, 29–26).

His progression keeps Uganda’s medal ambitions in boxing firmly on course.
Elsewhere, Alfred Ojok also impressed, powering into the Round of 16 in the men’s light heavyweight (80kg) category. He delivered a commanding performance against Niue’s Anitelea Launiu, securing a unanimous 5–0 victory with judges’ scores of 29–27, 29–27, 29–28, 30–26 and 30–26.
Ojok now faces a stern test against England’s Dimeji Shittu later today (Monday), with a quarterfinal berth at stake. Shittu enters the bout fresh, having received a bye into the Round of 16.
However, it was the end of the road for Ibrahim Khemis in the men’s lightweight (60kg) division. The Ugandan fell to Zambia’s Albert Ngulube, who controlled the contest en route to a clean 5–0 unanimous decision (29–26, 29–26, 29–26, 28–27, 29–26).
Attention now shifts to Uganda’s remaining fighters yet to step into the ring. In the women’s quarterfinals on Tuesday, July 28, Nakalema Emily will take on Australia’s Bryson Eve.
On Wednesday, Katushabe Angel awaits confirmation of her opponent, while Aziz Ringo is set for a showdown against England’s Damar Thomas.
