Driving rain and difficult playing conditions set the stage for a fiercely contested opening day at the USSSA Kampala Regional Zone Basketball Qualifiers, as school teams refused to relent in their pursuit of national qualification at Hamz Stadium on Monday.

Although the downpour disrupted the schedule and left several group stage fixtures incomplete, it did little to dampen the competitive spirit. Both boys’ and girls’ teams rose to the occasion, delivering performances marked by discipline, intensity, and unwavering ambition as the race for knockout stage places gathered momentum.

In the boys’ category, defending champions Kibuli Secondary School delivered a commanding statement with a 47-11 demolition of Kitante Hill.

Even with a significantly depleted squad—several key players rested—Kibuli asserted dominance across all four quarters, cruising 10-5, 8-3, 11-7, and 17-0 to seal an emphatic opening victory.

Mengo Secondary School also underlined their credentials with two crucial wins. They brushed aside Shree Sahajan School 30-7 before securing a convincing 39-17 triumph over Lubiri SS.

Their consistency continued with a 22-8 win against Katwe Noor, reinforcing their status as strong contenders.

Green Hill School showed admirable resilience, recovering from a 24-17 opening defeat to Makerere College to defeat Kyambogo College 32-21.

Elsewhere, Aga Khan edged Bishop Cyprian Kihangire 22-20 in one of the day’s most closely contested encounters.

In the girls’ competition, defending champions Nabisunsa Girls began their campaign in authoritative fashion, defeating Lubiri SS 30-12.

After taking the first quarter 9-2, Nabisunsa briefly faltered in the second (3-9) but responded emphatically with a dominant 14-0 third quarter before sealing the contest in the fourth.

Kibuli Secondary School were equally ruthless, dismantling Green Hill 36-5. Their quarter-by-quarter superiority—18-0, 9-2, 6-2, and 3-1—highlighted their defensive solidity and offensive efficiency.

Kitante Hill also impressed with a 21-12 victory over Aga Khan, while Mengo SS maintained their strong run with a composed 18-5 win against Bishop Cyprian Kihangire.

Tournament organizers have confirmed that action will resume Tuesday morning, with the remaining group stage fixtures set to be completed ahead of the knockout rounds and eventual finals.

With five qualification slots available per gender for the national championships, the stakes remain exceptionally high.

As competition intensifies, the Kampala qualifiers are already proving a fertile breeding ground for emerging basketball talent—many of whom appear poised for bigger stages in the near future.
