The 2025 Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games championship got off to a thrilling start, with Kampala University (KU) women’s handball team making a statement with a 28-17 victory over Nkumba University.

“We managed it well. They came with a man-to-man approach and disorganized us at the beginning, but we realized it and raised our speed to beat it,” said Harriet Nakirijja, KU’s captain, reflecting on the win.

“I’m happy that we have won our first game. It was a fair game, neither tough nor easy.

After this tie against Nkumba, there is another hard task ahead against Makerere University.

We are prepared to face the best if we are to win anything from this championship,” she added.

The day’s other standout performances included Victoria University’s 40-9 thrashing of IUIU in the women’s category, and Makerere University men’s team’s 41-11 demolition of hosts Uganda Christian University (UCU).

Ndejje University recorded successive wins, beating Mbarara University of Science and Technology 53-34 and Kampala University 49-31.

In a closely contested women’s match, UCU edged out Makerere University 21-20. Other results saw UCU beat Nkumba University 27-15 in the women’s category, and Kyambogo University lose 24-50 to Makerere University in the men’s category.
