Uganda Junior Gazelles head coach John Omondi is optimistic his side will hit the ground running at the forthcoming FIBA Africa Zone Five U-18 championship.
The championship set to be hosted in Lugogo Arena in Kampala will run from Sunday, the 9th to 14th June 2024.
The Junior Gazelles has spent one week in a residential camp at Africa Bible University (ABU), under intensified preparations since 1st June.
After a friendly match against Uganda’s top basketball breeders St. Noa Girls Secondary School-Zana, Omondi expressed readiness for his side to win the championship.
“Days are going so fast and we can never have too much time.
I think what we have covered is good enough for us to win the championship.
The girls are geared up. We have been having enough time to train with impactful friendlies.
These two friendlies with St. Noa have given us a scale of what position we can and likely to be.
Our expectations are nothing less than winning the championship.
We are home and I think that should also give us a boost. I call upon all good Ugandans to stand being the girls throughout this journey.
The Junior Gazelles have played two friendlies against St. Noa. The first friendly went 47-60 in favor of St. Noa at ABU.
This evening, the Gazelles paid back winning the Zana School girl by a difference of 19 points in a 58-39 win in Lugogo.
The team will shift from ABU tomorrow, Saturday, the 8th June to Nob View Hotel in Ntinda.
The championship has attracted four Nations including the host Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.
The champion will take the region’s sole ticket to the 2024 FIBA U-18 Africa championship to be held in Pretoria, South Africa come August.
