Express FC condemned KCCA FC to a second consecutive Uganda Premier League defeat, securing a 2-0 victory in a fiercely contested Kampala derby at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Thursday.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when KCCA committed numbers forward in search of an equaliser, only for Derrick Ddungu to exploit a defensive lapse and clinically finish beyond Mutwalibi Mugolofa to put the result beyond doubt.
Express had taken the lead six minutes after the restart through Isaac Wagoina, who kept his composure to calmly beat Mugolofa after the Red Eagles had weathered a competitive opening half.
The hosts almost extended their advantage moments later when Henry Wamala got past Mugolofa, but his effort struck the woodwork.
KCCA had enjoyed opportunities of their own before the interval. Saidi Mayanja came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute, his powerful effort crashing against the crossbar before Express scrambled the rebound away.
Sammy Ssebaduka also created an opening for Charles Lwanga, but Express goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya reacted sharply to palm the effort away.
The match had started at a frenetic pace, with Express appealing for a penalty as early as the third minute after Wagoina appeared to have been shoved inside the box. Referee Atiku, however, waved play on.
The contest was briefly interrupted soon afterwards when Atiku required medical attention after suffering an injury.
The victory lifts Express to sixth place on three points from two matches, while KCCA remain bottom of the table after suffering defeats in both of their opening fixtures.
