SC Villa return to action on Saturday seeking to reignite their title charge when they visit Lugazi FC at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe, with the opportunity to move top of the Uganda Premier League standings.
The Jogoos were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Blacks Power at Wankulukuku in their previous outing, leaving them second on 18 points.
However, victory against Lugazi could propel them to the summit, provided current leaders BUL FC stumble against Entebbe UPPC.
Zeljko Kovacevic’s charges have produced mixed performances in recent outings, but their unbeaten record remains intact.
Alongside BUL and Kitara, Villa are among the few sides yet to taste defeat this season, a record they will be eager to preserve as the campaign gathers momentum.
Lugazi, however, present a stern test, particularly on home turf. The hosts have recorded consecutive clean sheets against Express FC and BUL, underlining the defensive resilience Richard Ayiko’s men have developed in recent weeks.
Villa’s defence, marshalled by Arnold Odong, will also have to keep a close watch on Cromwell Rwothomio, who has scored three league goals so far.
The forward was on target in Lugazi’s 2-1 defeat to KCCA on Wednesday and will be determined to make his mark again.
At the opposite end, Villa will look to the attacking qualities of Frank Ssebuufu, Ibrahim Kasinde, Patrick Kakande and John Asiimwe to unlock a Lugazi defence that has proved difficult to breach at home.
The visitors will draw confidence from their recent head-to-head record, having won four of their last six meetings with Lugazi in all competitions, with the other two ending in draws.
Nevertheless, Villa cannot afford to underestimate a side capable of frustrating the league’s leading contenders, especially with the pressure of a potential title-race breakthrough hanging over the visitors.
KCCA, BUL and Kitara face crucial tests
Elsewhere, KCCA travel to Mbarara City seeking to maintain their momentum, while leaders BUL host Entebbe UPPC at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.
Kitara face an away assignment against UPDF at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, while Blacks Power welcome NEC to Bukedea Sports Complex.
The day’s headline fixture comes under floodlights at Hamz Stadium, where struggling URA host defending champions Vipers SC at 8pm.
Both sides will be desperate for a positive result as they seek to improve their respective positions in the standings.
Sunday’s programme features Ntugasaze against Express at Kira Police Arena in Kamwokya, while Maroons welcome Kigezi Home Boyz to Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
With the battle for early-season supremacy tightening, Villa have a clear objective in Najjembe: turn their unbeaten run into three points and put pressure on the teams above them.
