King Ceasor University finally have their first Pepsi University Football League victory after defeating Soroti University 2-0 away from home in Soroti City on Saturday.
Having endured a difficult debut campaign last season, when they managed just one goal, the Ggaba Road-based side delivered a composed performance to begin their new campaign on a winning note under head coach Derrick Kasumba.
The visitors’ success was built on their ability to exploit weaknesses in Soroti’s defensive line, particularly the space behind the backline, where long balls repeatedly caused problems.
King Ceasor threatened as early as the second minute, but Mugerwa Joachim failed to capitalise on an early opportunity.
Their pressure eventually paid off in the 25th minute when Kayondo Devis finished with a first-time effort after connecting with a long pass from Magala Hassan to put the visitors ahead.
Soroti had a chance to respond four minutes later, but Aelenyu Allan failed to hit the target despite finding himself in a promising position.
Devis missed two further opportunities before the interval, leaving King Ceasor with a narrow advantage at half-time.
The visitors resumed after the break with the same attacking intent, continuing to target the spaces behind Soroti’s defence.
Their persistence yielded a second goal in the 59th minute when they won a free kick on the left flank, just outside the penalty area. Mugisha Shedrack took responsibility and converted to extend King Ceasor’s lead to 2-0.
Soroti struggled to mount a meaningful comeback, with poor finishing undermining their attempts to get back into the contest.
Several promising opportunities ended with efforts sailing off target as King Ceasor’s defence remained organised.
The visitors’ resolve was tested in the 83rd minute when Barigye Willis received a second booking and was sent off, forcing Kasumba’s men to negotiate the closing stages with 10 players.
However, King Ceasor held firm to preserve their clean sheet and secure a landmark result that offers renewed hope after last season’s struggles.
The Pepsi University Football League action continues on Sunday, with Lira University hosting Gulu University in Lira.
