A single decisive moment proved enough to separate triumph from heartbreak as Muteesa I Royal University edged YMCA Institute 1–0 to win the Pepsi University Football League final at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
The breakthrough arrived in the 28th minute, when Mutambo Sam rose above the defense to power home a precise cross from Bukenya Twaha.
It was a goal crafted with conviction—and one that ultimately sealed a landmark victory for the Royal Lions.
Yet, the final might have taken a different course. YMCA Institute, featuring in their first-ever UFL showpiece, came agonizingly close to opening the scoring earlier in the 22nd minute.
Makubuya Trevor found space in a promising position but failed to control his effort, allowing a golden chance to slip by—an opportunity that would soon haunt his side.
From that point, Muteesa I Royal University asserted control with discipline and maturity.
Their defensive structure held firm against YMCA’s second-half pressure, calmly managing the contest to its conclusion and ensuring their slender advantage remained intact.
This victory represents more than just a title—it marks a remarkable ascent. Having joined the competition only in 2025, Muteesa become just the second university in league history to secure the championship within their first two seasons, emulating Kampala University’s feat from 2013.
While YMCA Institute will reflect on missed chances, their journey to a maiden final signals a promising future.
On the night, however, the spotlight belonged firmly to the Royal Lions, whose composure and efficiency delivered a defining chapter in their young history.
Elsewhere, Kampala University secured third place with a narrow 1–0 victory over St Lawrence University, courtesy of a decisive strike from Raymond Kiwewa.
Muteesa I Royal University’s triumph not only crowns them champions but also heralds the emergence of a formidable new force in Ugandan university football.
