The High Court in Kampala has dismissed an application by the Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) seeking to block the National Council of Sports (NCS) from recognising the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) as the body responsible for administering boxing in Uganda.
Justice Bernard Namanya dismissed the application on Monday after finding that the action UPBC sought to restrain had already been completed before the case came up for hearing.
At the centre of the dispute was UBF’s registration by NCS.
The court found that a certificate recognising the federation had already been issued in July 2025, making UPBC’s application for a temporary injunction ineffective.
Justice Namanya noted that a temporary injunction is prospective in nature, designed either to prevent an anticipated action or preserve an existing state of affairs.
It is not ordinarily intended to undo an action that has already taken place.
The court further relied on an April 9, 2026 letter indicating that NCS had authority to clear, handle and sanction boxing events in Uganda, covering both professional and amateur competitions.
The communication required organisers of boxing events to obtain clearance from UBF, a position that weakened UPBC’s contention that the federation’s mandate was confined to amateur boxing.
With the evidence before him, Justice Namanya ruled that UPBC had not established sufficient grounds for the temporary injunctive and mandatory orders it sought.
He consequently upheld the preliminary objection raised by the respondents and dismissed the application, holding that it had effectively been overtaken by events.
The decision leaves UBF’s registration with NCS intact and strengthens its position in the administration and sanctioning of boxing activities across Uganda, including professional and amateur events.
The ruling could further shape the ongoing contest over the authority and regulation of boxing in the country, particularly regarding which institution holds the final mandate to sanction and oversee competitions.
