Amus College School made a commanding start to the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship CECAFA Qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda, securing four wins from four matches across the boys’ and girls’ competitions on Thursday.
Uganda’s representatives collected maximum points in both categories, putting themselves in a strong position to reach the semi-finals ahead of Friday’s decisive final group matches.
The boys, competing at the FERWAFA Sports Complex, began with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Sudan, Vincent Kiiza scoring the decisive goal.
They followed it with an emphatic 3-0 dismissal of Burundi, with Keneddy Okwi twice finding the net in the third and 36th minutes.
Andrew Seguya added the second goal in the sixth minute as Amus underlined their attacking threat.
At Kigali Pele Stadium, the girls were equally impressive, opening with a 3-0 victory over Burundi before edging hosts Rwanda 1-0.
Hellen Namulondo, Faith Akoi and Irene Akurut were on target against Burundi, while Faith Trinah Nakawuuki scored the solitary goal against Rwanda to complete a perfect opening day.
The results leave both Ugandan teams well placed ahead of their final group fixtures on Friday morning.
The boys will face Somalia, while the girls take on South Sudan, with both teams needing positive results to seal their passage to the semi-finals.
The semi-finals will be played on Friday evening, before the third-place play-offs and finals take place on Saturday afternoon.
