Vipers SC underlined their credentials ahead of the new campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory over Kitara FC to lift the 2026 FUFA Super Cup at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Saturday evening.
The victory, sealed by goals from Odili Chukwuma, Karim Watambala and Gusto Mulongo, saw the defending Uganda Premier League champions overcome a spirited Kitara side in a contest that offered an early glimpse of what both teams could deliver on the domestic and continental fronts.
Vipers took control of the game before finally breaking the deadlock in the 32nd minute.
Chukwuma rose highest to head home Mulongo’s inviting delivery, giving the champions a 1-0 advantage at the interval.
The first half had already produced its share of drama.
Farouk Miya appeared to have put Vipers ahead in the 10th minute, but the effort was ruled out after Karim Watambala was adjudged offside in the build-up.
Kitara nearly benefited from a bizarre defensive moment seven minutes later when Ashraf Mandela produced a crucial goal-line clearance to prevent Joel Sserujongi from inadvertently putting the ball into his own net.
Vipers continued to threaten, with Princewill Tarabina coming within inches of doubling the advantage in the 22nd minute when his header from another well-weighted Miya delivery skimmed the crossbar.
Kitara returned from the break with greater urgency and were rewarded just before the hour mark.
Martin Kizza pounced from close range after Vipers failed to properly clear their lines, restoring parity and giving the underdogs renewed belief.
That resurgence, however, proved short-lived.
Vipers regained the initiative in the 68th minute when Watambala calmly converted Marvin Youngman’s precise pass to put the champions back in front.
Mulongo then put the result beyond doubt 10 minutes from time, powering a header into the net from another superb Miya delivery to complete a standout individual performance and seal the Super Cup for Vipers.
Beyond the silverware, the result served as an early statement from two Ugandan clubs preparing to carry the country’s flag into continental competition.
Both Vipers and Kitara will represent Uganda on the African stage, making the Super Cup an important early test of their readiness for the challenges ahead.
