St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School Kitende secured their first win at the ongoing 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Boys’ Football Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lubiri S.S in a fiercely contested Group P encounter on Tuesday evening in Lira City.
Played at St Katherine Secondary School playground in Boroboro, the clash lived up to its billing, with both sides displaying grit and intensity.
Nabil Rujumba broke the deadlock for the multiple national champions after a goalmouth scramble, before Ashraf Kyakuuwa doubled the advantage with a close-range finish.
Lubiri S.S, the reigning Kampala region champions, responded through Malith Abui, who pulled one back to set up a tense finale. However, Kitende held firm to claim maximum points and move to four points from two matches.
“We played aggressively for the maximum points. I salute the players. We still have a group stage match to play and we look forward to a solid performance,” noted Kitende head coach Hassan Zzungu after the match.
Despite the setback, Lubiri S.S head coach Dan Ssegawa remained optimistic, praising his players’ resilience while turning focus to a decisive final group fixture.
“We gave our best against St Mary’s Kitende. Unfortunately, we lost the battle. We shall fight until the last match,” Ssegawa stated.
In the other Group P fixture, Bukedea Comprehensive School (North) edged Seroma Christian High School 3-2 in a five-goal thriller, condemning Seroma to their second defeat of the tournament.
The result sets up a high-stakes conclusion in the group, with qualification to the knockout stage hanging in the balance.
Action continues on Wednesday morning with more fixtures lined up ahead of the official opening ceremony later in the afternoon, as the race for knockout qualification gathers momentum in Lira.
