Reigning league champions KCCA endured a frustrating start to their National Rally campaign, falling 25–23 to a spirited Weyonje Netball Club in a tightly contested opener at Kaddugala Secondary School, Masaka.

The much-anticipated encounter, played before a vibrant crowd, marked the debut of Uganda’s celebrated midcourt maestro, Margaret Baagala, following her high-profile switch from NIC Netball Club.

Deployed initially at Wing Attack, Baagala struggled to impose herself early on before reverting to her natural Centre position, where she rediscovered rhythm and influence.

Her performance in the latter stages was notable, highlighted by sharp interceptions and decisive ball recoveries that momentarily swung momentum in KCCA’s favour.

However, her individual brilliance proved insufficient to salvage the result for KCCA, who were visibly weakened by the absence of key personnel.

The champions missed the attacking prowess of Shadia Nassanga (Mima) and the defensive solidity of Christine Nakito, both reportedly on the verge of moves to Malaysia.

Goal shooter Mercy Batamuliza was also unavailable, having travelled to attend her father’s burial earlier in the week.

Weyonje, by contrast, displayed cohesion and resilience, managing the game with composure to secure a second consecutive victory in the competition.

Their earlier triumph saw them overcome UPDF 24–19, while defending champions NIC edged Police 31–28 in another closely fought fixture.

With two wins from two, Weyonje now sit atop the five-team standings with four points, positioning themselves as early frontrunners in the round-robin tournament where only the top team will be crowned champions.

The 2026 National Rally, which got underway on Friday, March 27, is set to conclude this Saturday evening, with National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel expected to officiate the closing ceremony.
