Uganda is making significant strides in preparing its facilities for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, with the National Council of Sports (NCS) confirming that the Namboole Stadium upgrade will commence in February.
“After setting everything up, the Namboole Stadium upgrade is to start this February.
The money for that job shall be coming in bits, but we are confident to have the work done to host AFCON 2027,” said NCS General Secretary Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel.
The upgrade is part of the government’s efforts to meet the required standards for AFCON 2027, which Uganda is co-hosting with Kenya and Tanzania.
Other facilities, such as Hoima City Stadium and Lira Stadium, are also under construction or being upgraded.
The need for improved facilities was highlighted by Kyambogo University Sports Tutor and President of the Association of Uganda University Sport, George Wagogo, who emphasized the importance of proper facility maintenance and the appointment of qualified personnel.
The discussion is ongoing, with a task force receiving ideas on proposals for the National Sports Facilities Regulations.
