The inaugural double-header of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League got off to a lackluster start, marred by controversy, empty stands, and a shocking no-show by reigning champions Vipers SC.
The much-anticipated fixtures, which pitted Vipers SC against Kitara FC and KCCA FC against SC Villa, were overshadowed by widespread discontent among fans and players alike.
Vipers SC, in a bold statement, refused to take to the pitch against Kitara FC, citing their disapproval of the new league format introduced by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
Their absence left a void, and the day’s proceedings were defined by the Kampala city derby between KCCA FC and SC Villa.
In a thrilling encounter, KCCA FC emerged victorious, edging SC Villa 2-1 in a closely contested match.
Ivan Ahimbisibwe’s stunning opener in the 31st minute set the tone, and despite Najib Yiga’s penalty equalizer for Villa at the hour mark, Umar Lutalo’s 89th-minute free kick sealed the win for the Kasasiro Boys.
The match was played in an empty stadium, with fans boycotting the game in protest of the new league format.
