The 2025 Ggombolola Cup officially kicked off on Sunday, January 19th, at Bishop SS in Mukuno, Kyaggwe, with the Buganda Kingdom Minister for Youth, Sports and Arts, Owek Robert Sserwanga, presiding over the ceremony.

This year’s edition promises to be an exciting one, with over 175 Sub Counties from the 18 counties of Buganda participating in the tournament.

The Ssekiboobo Cup marked the beginning of the 2025 Ggombolola Cup, with Mutuba IV Kawuga emerging victorious against Mumyuka Nakifuma in the opening game.

Hassan Ssentongo’s strike secured a 1-0 win for the hosts. The event was attended by 1st vice Ssekiboobo Owek Ssenyonjo, who welcomed the participants.

Ssekiboobo, the Kyaggwe Ssaza Chief, expressed his gratitude to the teams for the impressive display of football skills and encouraged all other Ggombolola teams to intensify their preparations to ensure a thrilling competition from start to finish.

According to Owek. Robert Sserwanga Ssalongo, the primary objective of the Ggombolola Cup is to prepare players for the Masaza Cup and Bika bya Baganda football tournaments.

He stated, “These competitions are to prepare players for both Masaza Cup and Bika bya Baganda football tournaments, and we believe that by the end of the year, we will be able to feed clubs from top leagues and the national team.”

The minister also urged the people of Buganda to come out and support all 175 sub-counties participating in the tournament.

The Ggombolola Cup is scheduled to conclude in June, paving the way for the Masaza Cup 2025, which kicks off in July 2025.
