Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), Association of Secondary Schools Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU) and Ministry of Education and Sports celebrated Uganda schools success at the recently concluded ISF and CAF Africa Schools championships.
The teams were hosted to a luncheon on Friday, the 31st May 2024 at Imperial Royale Hotel – Kampala
Uganda presented four teams at the ISF championship in Dalian, China; three boys and one girls’ football team.
Amus College School, Bukedea Comprehensive and St Mary’s College Kisubi were the boys teams whilst Amus College represented Uganda in girls football.
In boys football, Amus College lost to a host side China in the final to win a silver medal for Uganda.
Meanwhile, Bukedea Comprehensive secured a bronze medal for Uganda while St. Mary’s College Kisubi finished 31st.
In girls football, Amus College School finish 8th.
St Mary’s Boarding School Kitende and Kawempe Muslim SS were Uganda’s representatives at the CAF African Schools Championship held in Zanzibar.
However, the Kitende based school never had a better performance in the boys football category.
Kawempe Muslim Secondary School secured a bronze medal in girls football category and won USD150,000 as prize money.
David Katende, the National Council of Sports Assistant General Secretary who represented Sports Minister, Hon. Peter Ogwang, thanked USSSA for the great work done in the youthful learners.
While addressing the gathering, David Katende the Assistant General Secretary National Council of Sports (NCS) said, “There are four aspects in sports and all are crucial. Practicing, participating, performance and recognition.
I therefore, thank USSSA for taking us through these steps and now we are at a point of recognizing these athletes.
To the students, use your time in school to reach the best vision you desire. Sports time expires but think about time after sports.
Education is an added advantage to a talented athlete and once acquired, life after football will be a joy.” -David Katende Assistant General Secretary of NCS.
On the same occasion, USSSA president, Justus Mugisha was among the day’s dignitaries and speakers.
“While in Dalian, Uganda had the second highest number of teams, two behind the host country.
In modern day sports, out of a thousand athletes, only a few may make it to the podium.
Therefore, taking a pool of players is an advantage.”– Justus Mugisha USSSA President remarks.
This was Uganda’s second appearance at both events. Amus College School (boys football team) stands the best performer having won a sliver.
St. Noa Girls Secondary School-Zana won a bronze last year in Morocco.
At the CAF Africa Schools championship, Kawempe Muslim Secondary School is ever Uganda’s best achiever with a bronze medal.
