Uganda’s fairy tale run at the FIFA U17 World Cup came to a bitter end on Tuesday, as the Cubs were eliminated by Burkina Faso in the round of 16.
Despite a valiant effort, the team succumbed to a 5-3 penalty defeat after the game ended 1-1 at the Aspire Zone, Pitch 5.
Uganda had entered the game with confidence, having shocked Senegal in the previous round.
However, they were without key player James Bogere, who was suspended.
Coach Brian Ssenyondo made one change to the starting lineup, with Enock Bagenda replacing Bogere.
Burkina Faso dominated possession, but Uganda created chances, including a headed effort from Isima Magala that hit the post.
Abubakali Walusimbi and Richard Okello also tested the Burkina Faso goalkeeper, but it was Arafat Nkoola who broke the deadlock in the 56th minute with a curling shot.
Burkina Faso leveled matters through substitute Alassana Bagayogo, who scored from close range.
The game remained tied at the end of normal time, and coach Ssenyondo made late changes, introducing goalkeeper Adrian Mukwanga and Derrick Ssozi.
However, Burkina Faso proved too strong from the spot, converting all five penalties, while Ssozi missed Uganda’s fifth kick.
Uganda’s World Cup dream ended in heartbreak, but their performance has earned them recognition and pride.
Burkina Faso will face Italy in the quarterfinals, after Italy edged Uzbekistan 3-2.
