The Uganda Dance Sport Federation (UDSF) has officially activated the Kisubi Mapeera Secondary School Dance Sport Club, marking another milestone in the growing recognition of dance as a competitive sport in Uganda.
The activation ceremony took place on the evening of Sunday, April 19, 2026, and was attended by key federation officials, including General Secretary Barnabas Ssebuyungo, Vice President Gerald Kavuma, and members of the school administration.
Speaking at the event, Edrine Serwakulya, Head of Technical at UDSF, emphasized the evolving identity of dance beyond its traditional placement in Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD).
“Dance is a sport,” Serwakulya stated. “While it has long existed within artistic expression, we are here to introduce it to you as a structured, competitive discipline.
It belongs to the family of artistry sports alongside gymnastics, aquatics, and acrobatics, and is competed in on the international stage.”
He further highlighted that under the breaking category, Dance Sport has gained global recognition and is now featured at the Olympic level.
Uganda has already secured representation at the upcoming Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal, through Ntulume George William, who earned a silver medal at the Angola qualifiers.
Uganda’s Dance Sport team is also poised to secure three additional slots—two of them for female athletes—at the forthcoming qualifiers scheduled for June in Tunisia.
At the national level, Dance Sport has been integrated into school competitions, including the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) and the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games.
The launch at Kisubi Mapeera signifies a historic step in embedding the sport within the school’s co-curricular framework.
Since 2020, the federation has successfully launched a total of 380 Dance Sport clubs across the country, with Emmanuel College Kazo recognized as the pioneer institution.
The Kisubi Mapeera activation follows a recent regional outreach in West Nile, where a tour in Nebbi led to the establishment of 16 clubs across multiple schools.
These include Paidha Secondary School, Biyaya Secondary School, St. Mary’s Ediofe Girls Secondary School, Pakadha Secondary School, Rhino Camp Secondary School, Alpha Secondary School Koboko, Nebbi Town Secondary School, Panyango Secondary School, Waderai Secondary School, Bishop Angelo Terantino Memorial Secondary School, St. Luke Widi Secondary School Arua, Yumbe Secondary School, Kei Seed Secondary School, and Vurra Secondary School Arua.
Looking ahead, the federation’s next activation drive is scheduled for Mityana, where more than ten schools are expected to join the growing Dance Sport movement.
With increasing institutional support and international exposure, Dance Sport in Uganda is rapidly transitioning from a cultural pastime into a recognized and competitive athletic discipline.
