Uganda’s U20 Women national football team thumped Kenya 7-2 in the first leg of the U20 FIFA World Cup, a game held at Nyayo Stadium, in Nairobi, Kenya this evening.
Uganda’s deadly trio in forwards Juliet Nalukenge, skipper Fauzia Najjemba and Margret Kunihira continue to prove their wrath against every opponent.
Juliet Nalukenge and Sumaya Komuntale bagged a brace, a goal from Margret Kunihira, skipper Fauzia Najjemba, bossing midfielder Shamirah Nalugya as Uganda comfortably step onto the neighbors Kenya in the regional derby.
Shaylene Opisa scored the goals for Kenya in 61 and 79 minutes of play.
The two sides are expected to face off in the return leg between 7th and 9th October 2021 Uganda’s capital Kampala.
Kenyan forwards were completely cut off of their traditional long balls by the Uganda midfield brain powers Shamirah Nalujja, Shakira Nyinagahirwa and Haddijja Nandago.
The team had three practice matches with the senior side (Uganda Crested Cranes) They won 4-0 and lost the other two games by 1-0.
This team is majorly comprised of the Uganda U17 squad that registered great success in 2019 under coach Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi by winning the COSAFA U17 championship when they beat South Africa 2-1.
The then captain Juliet Nalukenge and current captain Fauziah Najjemba scored the two goals for Uganda against South Africa during the final in Mauritius.
They further won the inaugural CECAFA U17 championship held in Njeru, Uganda after a 2-0 win against Kenya .
In the same game, Najjemba and Nalukenge hit the score sheet.
This is a qualification for the 10th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup slated for August 10th to 28th 2022 in Costa Rica.
The aggregate winner between Uganda and Kenya over two legs will face winner between Mozambique and South Africa.
South Africa leads the tie after a 1-0 away win against Mozambique in Matola. Zethembiso Vilakazi scored South Africa’s only goal in the 36th minute.
At this World Cup, Africa has only two slots.
