SC Villa climbed to the summit of the Uganda Premier League standings after a 2-1 victory over Lugazi FC in Mabira on Saturday, while URA FC compounded Vipers SC’s misery with a narrow victory under new head coach Sam Ssimbwa.
The ninth round of the 2026/27 campaign produced significant movement at both ends of the table, with Villa taking advantage of BUL FC’s dropped points to claim top spot, while Vipers suffered a second consecutive league defeat for the first time this season.

At the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, URA secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Vipers in a rain-soaked encounter played under floodlights.
Captain Moses Aliro Okabo struck on the stroke of half-time to hand the Tax Collectors maximum points and extend their revival under Ssimbwa, who has now overseen consecutive victories since taking charge.
URA had beaten UPDF FC 1-0 on Tuesday before dispatching the Venoms, who arrived in Kampala still smarting from their 1-0 defeat to Mbarara City.
For Vipers, the latest setback represents a worrying departure from their usual consistency.
The reigning heavyweights have now suffered three defeats this season, including successive losses in the first round, leaving them with considerable ground to recover in the title race.
The visitors had a late opportunity to rescue a point when second-half substitute Farouk Miya stepped up from 12 yards.
However, goalkeeper Khassim Hafizi produced a crucial save to preserve URA’s advantage and seal another important result for the hosts.
The victory lifted URA to 10 points and 11th place, while Vipers remained eighth on 11 points from eight matches.
At the other end of the standings, SC Villa made their move at the top with a 2-1 triumph over Lugazi in Mabira.

Goals from Frank Ssebuufu and John Asiimwe secured the Jogoos’ ninth-round victory, taking the record champions to 21 points from nine matches and placing them firmly in control of the title race.
Villa’s rise was aided by BUL FC, who surrendered their position at the summit after being held to a 1-1 draw by Entebbe UPPC.
The Eastern Giants dropped to third on 20 points, while UPPC remained fourth with 16 points, maintaining their position among the early contenders.
Meanwhile, KCCA FC registered an impressive 3-1 away victory over Mbarara City, adding another important result to their campaign.
Kitara FC also collected maximum points on the road, edging UPDF FC 1-0, while BUL and Entebbe UPPC shared the spoils in the day’s other draw.
