Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been selected to ascend the Tooro throne, days after the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The decision was reached by the General Meeting of the Ababiito clan, the royal clan vested with the authority to identify the suitable candidate to succeed the late king.
According to Monsignor Isaiah Mayombo, the clan’s succession committee conducted consultations and due diligence before endorsing Prince Kijanangoma as the kingdom’s next Omukama.
In a resolution signed by 19 members of the committee, the members said their decision followed extensive consultations and consideration of the candidates.
“Having been elected by the General Meeting of Ababiito Clan to elect the suitable candidate for the throne of Tooro upon the demise of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, aware that the authority to elect the king of Tooro lies with the Ababiito clan,” the resolution reads in part.
The committee added that it had acted under the leadership of Omujwera Musuuga, head of the Ababiito clan, before reaching its decision.
The resolution formally names Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and grandson of former Omukama George David Rukidi III, as the person to be enthroned as the new King of Tooro.
The committee said the enthronement will be conducted in accordance with the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom, setting the stage for the next phase of the succession process.
Prince Kijanangoma’s selection comes shortly after the death of King Oyo, who passed away on August 27, 2026, ending a reign that began when he ascended the throne as a child.
His nomination now places the kingdom at the beginning of a new chapter, with the formal enthronement expected to follow the established cultural traditions and procedures of Tooro.
The development is also likely to attract considerable attention within the royal family, the Ababiito clan and among Tooro subjects as preparations for the new king’s enthronement take shape.
The succession committee, however, maintained that its decision was reached within its mandate and followed consultations undertaken to identify a suitable successor to the late Omukama Oyo.
