Some love stories do not end because affection has faded.

They end because the heart cannot persuade another heart to stay.

For Karolinska Elena, this is a confession of love, regret and the painful dignity of walking away from someone one still longs to call their own.

Karolinska Elena, yours was a rare kind of affection, the sort that arrives unexpectedly and rearranges everything one thought they understood about life.

You stole my heart in the sanctity of a church service, where I should have been surrendering my thoughts to God.

Instead, there you stood, and something within me changed. You turned me inside out, awakened emotions I could neither explain nor contain, and showed me what it meant to desire a future with another human being.

Yet, from the beginning, we seemed destined to occupy opposite sides of an impossible equation: like fire and water, drawn together in imagination but unable to coexist without one threatening to extinguish the other.

I wanted you to be mine. You did not want the same.

And so, I have learnt that even the most sincere affection cannot manufacture reciprocity.

One may offer the heart without reservation, yet the person receiving it remains free to decline.

When the morning sun slips through my bedroom window, I sometimes awaken from dreams in which I see you standing at the pulpit.

For a fleeting moment, the distance between us disappears.

Then reality returns, and I find myself back on the road, travelling once more, carrying memories of what might have been.

Outside the Ekerezia compound parking, the remnants of my expectations seem to linger like fragments of a future that never materialised.

There are places that become more than locations; they become witnesses to our unspoken hopes, the conversations we remember and the possibilities we were never fortunate enough to explore.

Elena, how I wish love alone were sufficient to build a life together.

I have so much I would have wanted to share with you: affection, companionship, loyalty and the simple privilege of facing tomorrow beside someone whose presence makes the journey worthwhile.

In another version of our story, perhaps those things would have been enough.

But ours has been complicated by the weight of my past. I cannot pretend that my previous mistakes have no consequences, nor can I demand that you overlook what you are unable to accept.

Somewhere along the way, my heart travelled east while my soul wandered west. I lost my bearings, and by the time I understood what truly mattered, the road back had become painfully uncertain.

If only I could return to the days before our problems took shape, when love appeared uncomplicated and every question seemed to possess an answer.

If only I could recover the moment when your magic still shone brightly in my arms, before regret began to cast its shadow over everything we shared.

Perhaps that is the cruelty of hindsight: it gives us the wisdom we needed only after the opportunity to use it has passed.

Karolinska, the pain of accepting our separation has proved exhausting. It reaches beyond disappointment into the quiet recesses of the soul, where memories become difficult to silence.

There is a particular sadness in knowing that the person for whom you would gladly make room in your life may be making that room for someone else.

Love can be a strange misery. Sometimes, the person one longs for is longing for another. And no matter how deeply one feels, there comes a point when persistence ceases to be an expression of devotion and becomes a refusal to accept reality.

I have reached that point.

My age, my experiences and the weariness of repeated disappointment are compelling me to reconsider the endless pursuit of possibilities that may never become reality.

I cannot spend the remainder of my days chasing an elusive future while neglecting the peace I still have a chance to recover.

My evening has come, and perhaps this is the season in which I must learn to sit quietly with my own thoughts.

I will consult my gods of Kifuuta, as tradition and reflection have taught me, and remember Jjaajja’s counsel to pay attention to the feet, fingers and toes.

Even amid heartbreak, there are inherited lessons and familiar voices that remind us to pause, reflect and seek wisdom beyond the immediate demands of the heart.

For now, I must return to the old position of a loner, not because solitude is what I desired, but because it may be kinder than fighting indefinitely for something I cannot secure.

Still, I refuse to dismiss what we shared as a mistake. Thank you, Elena, for the time we spent together, for the moments that brought me happiness and for the memories that will remain long after our paths have separated.

I will never take those moments for granted.

Whatever little I received from you was precious to me. In its own way, it was the best of what our circumstances permitted.

Not every meaningful relationship must culminate in permanence to have mattered. Some encounters leave their deepest impressions precisely because they teach us the difference between loving someone and possessing a place in their future.

And so, the affair has ended, but the affection has not disappeared on command.

Karolinska Elena, I release you, but I cannot honestly claim that my heart has followed.

I am returning to the Bible you gave me, seeking refuge in the pages and promises that remain when human relationships falter.

Perhaps there I will find the steadiness I have struggled to discover in love: a source of comfort that does not depend on another person’s decision to stay.

I will carry no illusion that faith erases heartbreak overnight.

Instead, I hope it will teach me how to live with the unanswered questions, how to acknowledge my mistakes without allowing them to define every remaining chapter of my life, and how to accept that another person’s freedom is not an injustice against my affection.

You may never fully understand what you awakened in me. You may remember our time together differently, and you are entitled to your own interpretation of our story.

I cannot demand that you feel what I feel, nor can I rewrite the past to make our ending more bearable.

All I can do is tell the truth about my heart.

I loved you, Elena.

I love you, Karolinska.

And because I love you, I must allow you the freedom to choose a life that does not include me.

This is not the ending I wanted. It is simply the ending I must learn to accept.

I release you, Karolinska Elena. I surrender what I cannot keep, entrust what I cannot change to God, and begin the difficult work of making peace with myself.

I leave with gratitude for the beautiful moments, regret for the mistakes, and a heart that has not yet learnt how to stop loving you.

For now, I rest—not because the pain has ended, but because I am tired of fighting a battle that love alone cannot win.
