KAMPALA, Uganda — Makerere University is placing inclusive sport at the centre of preparations for the 15th Federation of East Africa University Sports (FEAUS) Games, with the para-sports programme set for its most expansive edition yet.
For the first time, the competition will feature three disciplines — goalball, sitting volleyball and showdown (blindfold badminton), marking a significant expansion from the single-discipline programme used in previous editions.
The para-sports competition, now entering its fourth edition, made its debut at the 2018 FEAUS Games in Dodoma, Tanzania.
It was subsequently staged at Ndejje University in Uganda in 2022 and Maseno University in Kenya in 2024.
Makerere’s Head of Para Sports Programme, Jameson Ssenkungu, says the host institution is determined to ensure students with disabilities are provided with an environment in which they can compete with confidence and dignity.
“As a University, we are focused on inclusivity, where every student has a chance to play regardless of their physical appearance.”
Ssenkungu added that preparations are being intensified to ensure the facilities meet the needs of para-sport athletes.
“We are preparing intensively to ensure the para-sports students find facilities that can enable them to compete favourably and effectively.
The university management is very supportive, and we expect an excellent environment by Games time.”
Makerere has featured in every edition of the para-sports programme and has emerged victorious on each occasion.
Hosting the 2026 Games has therefore provided the university with an opportunity not only to defend its record but also to advocate for broader participation.
“This edition is a unique one. As Makerere, we have been at all the editions and won all.
However, this time, as we host the Games, we have been at the centre of advocacy for an expanded menu.”
“Before, it has been only goalball, but now sitting volleyball and showdown will beef up the roster.” Ssenkungu.
The expansion reflects a broader effort to make university sport more accessible and provide athletes with disabilities with additional competitive platforms.
The 2026 FEAUS Games will begin with the arrival of teams on 13 December, followed by the official opening ceremony on 14 December.
Competition will run from 15 to 20 December at Makerere University.
Makerere assumed hosting responsibilities after the University of Dodoma withdrew from the hosting arrangement, paving the way for the Ugandan institution to take over preparations for the 15th edition.
