Kibuli Secondary School and Mbogo High School reaffirmed their supremacy on the national stage after clinching the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively at the 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) National Badminton Championships, held at Seroma Christian High School in Mukono on Thursday, May 7.
In emphatic fashion, Kibuli swept aside Kinaawa High School Kawempe 3–0 in the boys’ final, while Mbogo High School mirrored that scoreline with a commanding victory over Rubaga Girls School in the girls’ decider.
The triumphs extended remarkable title streaks, with Kibuli securing a sixth consecutive championship and Mbogo stretching their dominance to an unprecedented ten straight national crowns.
Ruthless in the Finals
The boys’ final delivered high-intensity contests despite the one-sided overall score.
In Men’s Singles One (MS1), Denis Mukasa edged Bruno Agaba in a gripping three-set duel, prevailing 22–20, 20–22, 21–19.
Akbar Oduka then tightened Kibuli’s grip with a composed 15–12, 15–8 victory over Joshua Ogwang in MS2.
Tendo Arafat Kibirige sealed the title in MS3, overcoming Fredrick Kadoli 21–23, 21–12, 21–14 after a resilient comeback.
The doubles matches—Ahmed Malik Juma/Tendo Arafat Kibirige versus Bruno Agaba/Fredrick Kadoli (MD1), and Denis Mukasa/Akbar Oduka against Abdul Razak Mabuya/Ryan Muteesasira (MD2)—were rendered inconsequential as Kibuli had already secured the decisive three points.
In the girls’ final, Mbogo’s class was equally evident.
Ramiah Bukenya set the tone with a 21–10, 21–15 victory over Olivia Betty Kyomukama in Women’s Singles One (WS1).
Musa Maliha followed with a hard-fought 21–8, 18–21, 21–14 win against Claire Namirembe in WS2, before Vivian Nalule sealed the championship with a 21–13, 21–18 triumph over Kate Ndagire in WS3.
Classification and Notable Results
In the boys’ third-place playoff, Seroma Christian High School defeated Kakungulu Memorial School 3–0.
Edward Owaruhanga overcame Abdulawal Serubiri in MS1 (15–8, 16–18, 16–18), while Eric Ofoyuru dispatched Julius Zamba 15–11, 15–6 in MS2. Aaron Ndaula completed the sweep with a 15–6, 15–7 victory over Ryan Serwadda in MS3.
The doubles fixtures (MD1 and MD2) were not required.
Road to the Finals
Mbogo High School reached the final after a commanding 3–0 semi-final victory over Mariam High School.
Kimberly Joan Ssendiwala opened with a dominant 15–4, 15–7 win over Abigail Akoyo, before Olivia Betty Kyomukama extended the lead, defeating Adam Asania 15–12, 15–8.
Cate Ndagire then sealed progression with a 15–9, 15–7 triumph over Husnah Mirembe, ensuring Rubaga advanced without dropping a match.
In contrast, Mbogo had to dig deep in their semi-final against hosts Seroma Christian High School, eventually prevailing 3–1.
Ramiah Bukenya gave them an early advantage with a 15–4, 15–7 win over Benitah Nassiwa, but Seroma responded through Abigail Mawanda Ndagire, who beat Maliha Musa 15–10, 15–12.
Mbogo regained control in the doubles, with Vivian Nalule and Ramiah Bukenya overcoming Ruth Ayikoru, before Tharah Nagujja partnered Bukenya to seal qualification with a clinical 15–11, 15–6 and 15–4, 15–8 victory over Nassiwa and Swabrah Nayiga.
In the boys’ competition, Kibuli stormed into the final with a ruthless 3–0 victory over Kakungulu Memorial School.
Kinaawa, however, demonstrated resilience and composure, edging Seroma Christian High School 3–2 in a tightly contested semi-final to book their place in the decider.
Record Participation and Regional Qualification
The 2026 edition attracted a record 40 schools, surpassing last year’s 36 and underscoring the growing stature of badminton within Uganda’s school sports calendar.
Following their performances, the top four teams in each category have qualified for the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games scheduled for August in Morogoro, Tanzania.
In the boys’ category, Kibuli Secondary School, Kinaawa High School Kawempe, Seroma Christian High School, and Kakungulu Memorial School secured qualification.
In the girls’ division, Mbogo High School, Rubaga Girls School, Seroma, and Mariam High School will represent Uganda on the regional stage.
