Greenlight Islamic Secondary School–Nansana produced a display of nerve and resilience to eliminate tournament heavyweights Kibuli Secondary School, winning 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout after a goalless stalemate in regulation time to book their place in the Round of 16 at the ongoing Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) National Boys Football Championship in Lira.
In a contest billed as one of the standout fixtures of the knockout phase, both sides delivered a fiercely competitive yet tactically disciplined performance, cancelling each other out over 90 minutes.
Clear-cut chances were at a premium as defensive organisation and midfield intensity defined proceedings.
With no breakthrough in normal time, the tie was inevitably decided from 12 yards — where Greenlight held their composure.
Abdul Razak Iradikunda, Hamza Ssentamu and Andabati Christian Terry converted their penalties with clinical precision, while Thomas Calvin Kawooya was the only one to miss for Greenlight.
Kibuli, on the other hand, struggled under pressure, with only Musa Kironde and Medie Nsereko finding the back of the net. Vicent Kasangaki, Reagan Nyanzi and Ssejja Paddy all failed to convert, ultimately costing their side progression.
The defining moment of the shootout, however, belonged to substitute goalkeeper Kake Wakake.
Introduced in the dying seconds of normal time specifically for penalties, Wakake delivered a masterclass in shot-stopping, saving three penalties in a remarkable exhibition of anticipation and composure.
His heroics not only sealed Greenlight’s victory but also reinforced his growing reputation as a specialist in high-pressure situations.
Notably, this is not unfamiliar territory for the shot-stopper.
Wakake previously saved three penalties during Greenlight’s Buganda Cup quarter-final triumph over Gombe, and replicated the feat last year at the national championship in Ngora High School, where his saves guided his side past Amus College School in a 4-3 shootout victory following another goalless draw.
Greenlight’s triumph sets up a tantalising Round of 16 encounter against Bukedea Comprehensive Secondary School–South, who cruised past Bristol Secondary School with a commanding 3-0 victory.
Elsewhere, St. Mary’s College Kisubi (NUMASA) dispatched Mvara Secondary School 3-1, while Busia Secondary School advanced after edging their opponents 5-4 on penalties following a barren draw.
NUMASA will now face Busia SS in another intriguing Round of 16 clash.
The championship, which kicked off on May 10, will climax on May 19 at Lira Town College Playground.
The stakes remain high, with the top four teams earning qualification to represent Uganda at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games slated for August in Morogoro, Tanzania.
