Gulu University got off to a flying start in the Pepsi University Football League, edging out Lira University 1-0 in a tightly contested match on a chilly Wednesday evening in Gulu.

Nyeko Rogers scored the decisive goal in the 27th minute after a defensive mix-up in Lira’s backline gave him a golden chance, which he converted with ease, sending the home fans into jubilation.

The early exchanges showed opening-day nerves from the Lira boys, but their defensive and midfield chemistry looked promising.

In the second half, Lira returned with renewed composure, piling pressure on the hosts.

Their best chance came in the 84th minute when they won a free kick, expertly swung into the box by Okello Solomon, who rose highest to nod the ball into the net.

However, the assistant referee’s flag cut short their celebrations due to a controversial offside call.

Lira’s technical bench strongly protested the decision, but skipper Okeng Emmanuel demonstrated great leadership by calming his teammates and ensuring the match resumed without further incident.
