Uganda’s Flavia Kusiima stared to win six out of seven medals team Uganda in Zambia at Africa and World Draughts championships.
A total of seven medals were won by team Uganda at the recently concluded African and World Draughts championships in Lusaka, Zambia.
The championship started on 9th to 14th July and the team returned home on 19th .
The team participated in three types including; the Brazilian Draughts, Russian Draughts and poolcheckers.
Masindi Draughts Club Super star Flavia Kusiima won a record six medals and one from Lilian Namujjuzi.
“I’m proud of the milestone reached and we are too thankful for whoever supported us in this cause.
The medals bring hunger in me to win more and I’m looking at the next global events.” Flavia Kusiima.
Flavia Kusiima won one Gold, two silver and three bronze medals whilst Namujjuzi grabbed a silver.
In his words on the return of team, the president Uganda Draughts Federation Dan Isabirye threw thanks to NCS for supporting the team financially.
“we thank NCS for the support to the trip out to Zambia. This makes the largest number of players to go out of the country and indeed our victory was worth the government investment in it”.
The president was in company with the entire executive members and we’re received by National Council of Sports (NCS) assistant general secretary Joseph Oluga at NCS headquarters in Lugogo. At the luncheon, the team was received by the assistant general secretary in charge of administration Joseph Oluga who showered praise to the winning team.
“It wasn’t a pleasant moment during departure than it is now. Your display at the championship is a sign of unity and discipline .
We are proud of you medalists Kusiima and Lilian Namujjuzi. your break through into the global drafts arena is a great opportunity for may others in the sport.” Joseph Oluga.
The team travelled with ten (10) players four of whom were women and six men.
Sam Senoga (Seeta), Dan Isabirye (Makerere), Musa Ssentamu (Kisenyi), Abdul Hafiz (Gulu Acholi Lane), Alunya Nyero Richard (Gulu Bus/Taxi Park) and Isaac Dan Bafaki (Nakasero)
Whilst the women included Flavia Kusiima (Masindi), Lilian Namujjuzi (MIHS), Sandra Mbabazi (Makerere) and Sarah Nabirye from Kamuli Draughts Club.
All world cup events were won by a youthful Russian grand master who is also the European champion Roman Schukin.
They were received by the assistant general secretary in charge of administration Joseph Oluga who showered praise to the winning team.
