In a stunning turn of events, reigning Buganda Masaza Cup champions Buddu suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ssese in the Bulange Group contest on Saturday at Lutobooka, ending their journey at the group stage.

Alaphat Muyanja’s second-half goal proved to be the decisive factor, dashing Buddu’s hopes of defending their crown.

Buddu, who won the competition last year with a 1-0 victory over Kyaggwe in the final at Namboole, crashed out of the tournament at the group stage for the first time in many years.

This exit marks a significant departure from their previous performances, where they had at least reached the last eight in previous editions.

Meanwhile, Ssese’s victory has propelled them into contention for the last eight, needing just a point to secure their place alongside Buluuli and Busujju, who are both on 15 points in the Bulange group.

Buddu, on the other hand, sit fourth with 9 points, while Busiro has 8 points and record winners Gomba languish at the bottom with 6 points.

Three former champions – Buddu, Gomba, and Busiro – all in the Bulange Group, have been eliminated from the competition.

This unexpected turn of events has set the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the group stage, with Ssese and their competitors vying for a spot in the last eight.
