Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) has secured a place in the quarter-finals of the AUUS Games football championship, despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Nkumba University in the group stage finale.

The Nkozi-based side battled hard but were undone by a clinical Nkumba side, inspired by Abbey Kavuma’s strikes in the 13th and 50th minutes.

However, results elsewhere swung in UMU’s favour, allowing them to progress among the top eight and keep their title ambitions alive heading into the knockout phase.

UMU had come into the last group stage fixture determined, thumping Soroti University 6-0 in their previous match, thanks to strikes from Yiga Steven, Jjonga Nicholas, Kidega Godfrey, and Emayu Calvin.

The final round of group matches produced goals and decisive outcomes, with St Lawrence University delivering an emphatic 8-1 rout of ISBAT University.

Kampala University edged Bugema University 1-0, courtesy of Paul Busolo’s 53rd-minute strike, while Uganda Christian University claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Bugema University, with Peter Kyomuhendo netting the decisive goal in the 62nd minute.

Other notable results included Makerere University’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Nkumba University, MUBS’ 1-0 victory over Bishop Stuart University, and Kyambogo University’s 2-0 win over Soroti University.
