The 21st edition of the prestigious Airtel Masaza Cup was officially launched at a vibrant ceremony held at the Bulange gardens in Mengo.

The tournament, organized under the stewardship of the Buganda Kingdom and proudly sponsored by Airtel Uganda, continues to be a cultural cornerstone and a powerful platform for nurturing football talent across the region.

A Celebration of Unity and Heritage

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, highlighted the transformative role of sports in national development, emphasizing that sports like the Masaza Cup contribute significantly to social and economic development.

He stressed the need for more investment in sporting infrastructure and conveyed a directive from Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II mandating that starting in 2026, every Masaza Cup team should transition into a fully registered football club.

Partnerships and Support

Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director, Soumendra Sahu, reiterated the telecom company’s unwavering support for Buganda Kingdom’s activities and the Masaza Cup.

“We are honoured to continue this partnership which celebrates unity, heritage, and sporting excellence,” Sahu remarked.

He also announced the launch of special Masaza Cup bundles that will allow Airtel customers to stay connected with affordable voice and data packages during the tournament.

Empowering Communities through Sport

Plascon Brand Manager Daniel Kayongo delivered a passionate address, underscoring the brand’s deep-rooted partnership with the Kingdom and its dedication to empowering communities through sport.

“This tournament embodies the spirit, talent, and unity of the Buganda Kingdom,” Kayongo said.

He highlighted the company’s relationship with the Buganda Kingdom, built on a shared vision to uplift communities, preserve cultural heritage, and provide opportunities for future generations.

Economic Impact

The Chairman of the Airtel Buganda Masaza Cup organising committee, Suleiman Ssejjengo, highlighted the tournament’s economic impact, revealing that each matchday provides direct employment to over 4,500 individuals across Buganda.

This year’s edition will feature 104 matches, spread across 16 matchdays, culminating in the final on November 1.

The Tournament

The Airtel Masaza Cup brings together teams from the 18 traditional counties (Masaza) of Buganda, showcasing both competitive spirit and cultural pride. Defending champions Buddu will host Gomba in the opening match set for Saturday, June 21 at Kitovu.

The encounter promises to set the tone for what is expected to be a thrilling season filled with fierce competition and a celebration of Buganda’s sporting heritage.
