My sons and daughters, sometimes the smallest encounter becomes the biggest turning point in your life. They call it serendipity—a beautiful accident.
For me, that moment came in 1998 at Hotel Indaba, Fourways, along Witkoppen Road, between Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Apartheid had ended, but Fourways remained predominantly white. Inside the hotel, a live band filled the air with soulful saxophone and violin melodies.
Sitting alone at the counter, I noticed a beautiful African woman sipping Windhoek lager. Her name was Thobile Zulu, daughter of a president.
I ordered four shots of Rémy Martin XO, neat. That simple act attracted attention, and Thobile crossed over to join me.
We talked, laughed and danced. She struggled to pronounce my name, calling me Mbassi instead of Mbazzi. We still laugh about it today.
But that evening was more than a dance. It was the beginning of a relationship that has endured from 1998 to this day.
Through Thobile, I discovered Durban, forged a lasting bond with her brother Sithokomere and was welcomed into their family.
Their warmth eventually persuaded me to invest in property, and I bought a house on Inhloni Crescent.
Years later, in 2008, that same network of relationships helped me secure a subcontract during the construction of King Shaka International Airport.
Imagine that! A young man from Kifuuta, Kyotera, Buddu, contributing to the construction of a major South African international airport.
What is the lesson?
My children, opportunities often arrive disguised as ordinary encounters. Confidence may open the door, but character, gratitude and enduring relationships keep it open.
Do not underestimate the person sitting beside you, the customer who visits your business or the stranger you meet along the way.
Thobile gave me more than friendship; she introduced me to a family, a city and opportunities I could never have predicted.
Remember: serendipity may introduce you to opportunity, but how you nurture the relationship determines what follows.
Your Hotel Indaba moment may be waiting for you tomorrow.
