Fresh from conquering the CECAFA region and becoming the first Ugandan club to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League finals, Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC will open their Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League (FWSL) title defence against newcomers Jinja United WFC in a landmark double-header.
The champions will face Jinja United on Saturday, September 19, at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, in a 4:00pm kick-off before Vipers SC host Ntugasaze FC at the same venue at 8:00pm in Uganda Premier League tie.
The fixture will usher in a new era for Uganda’s women’s game, with FUFA introducing season double-headers that pair FWSL matches with selected Uganda Premier League fixtures.
Seven such double-headers will be staged across the first round at St. Mary’s Stadium, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo and MTN Omondi Stadium.
The initiative is intended to expose the women’s game to larger audiences while providing clubs with access to quality infrastructure.
The arrangement also dovetails with UPL club licensing requirements, which oblige clubs to own or partner with women’s teams.
Kawempe enter the campaign as Uganda’s most decorated women’s football club, having won a record six league titles since the inaugural 2014/15 season.
Their latest continental breakthrough, however, has raised expectations ahead of a season in which they must balance domestic dominance with preparations for the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
FUFA has also moved all FWSL kick-offs to 4:00pm following consultations with clubs, with the adjustment approved by the FUFA Executive Committee.
The 12-team league begins on September 19, with the remaining five opening-round fixtures scheduled for September 20.
