The unexpected opening-day defeat suffered by defending champions Vipers SC has given KCCA FC and SC Villa an early opportunity to lay down their own title credentials when the Uganda Premier League continues on Saturday.
KCCA welcome NEC to MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, while record 17-time champions SC Villa entertain Kitara at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, with both sides targeting maximum points.
For KCCA, the encounter offers another chapter in their rivalry with NEC after the two sides met in the FUFA Super 8 final, where Brian Ssenyondo’s side prevailed 1-0 through Said Mayanja’s penalty.
NEC will be eager to avenge that defeat, but their immediate priority is a positive league start as they seek to mount a serious title challenge.
The Kampala-based side will also begin life without Joseph Sseremba, who joined Nairobi United, while the availability of new signing Fahad Bayo remains uncertain.
KCCA, meanwhile, can call on an attacking unit strengthened by the arrival of Ibrahim Kasule, Yunus Sibira and Charles Lwanga, all of whom will be expected to provide the goals.
At Wankulukuku, Villa renew acquaintances with Kitara following their goalless Super 8 third-place playoff, which the Jogoos eventually won on penalties.
The stakes are considerably higher this time, with Villa coach Wasswa Bbosa likely to use the encounter to fine-tune his side ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup assignment against Mogadishu City.
Elsewhere, newly promoted Blacks Power and Ntugasaze will square off at Hoima City Stadium, while Lugazi entertain Kigezi Home Boyz at Najjembe.
Police host Mbarara City at Kira Police Arena, with UPDF completing Saturday’s programme against Kataka at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
