Cricket’s long-awaited introduction to the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games II got underway in emphatic fashion in Gulu, offering a compelling glimpse into the sport’s growing footprint in school competitions.

At St. Joseph’s College Layibi, Busoga College Mwiri immediately stamped their authority on the inaugural boys’ contest, sweeping past Ngora High School in both opening fixtures to take early control of the best-of-three series.

Mwiri’s dominance was most pronounced in the opening match. After Ngora elected to field, Mwiri produced a commanding batting display, posting 171 for 3 in 17 overs.

In response, Ngora—playing their first-ever competitive cricket match—were bundled out for just 29 runs in 10.3 overs, handing Mwiri a crushing 142-run victory.

Kisira Joshua anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 74 off 52 balls, earning Player of the Match honours.

The second encounter followed a similar script, albeit with signs of improvement from the Teso Zone representatives.

Ngora, opting to bat first this time, managed 49 for 9 in 15 overs. Mwiri chased down the modest target in 8.4 overs, losing three wickets to seal victory and assert their superiority once again.

Arikiriza Trevour was named Player of the Match for his contribution in the chase.

Despite the results, Ngora’s participation carries significant developmental value, with the team only taking up cricket a month ago.

Their progression between matches underlined both resilience and potential as they continue to adapt to the demands of the sport.

The two sides are set to meet twice more, with the overall winner of the series to be crowned champion.

Mwiri captain Kisubi Martin remained measured despite the strong start, emphasizing consistency:

“Today’s games were both good. The opponents were competitive, but as Mwiri, we must maintain our standards and always perform at our very best.”

Ngora’s captain Ekiba Solomon struck a tone of optimism, highlighting growth within his ranks:

“It is our first time facing a strong team like Mwiri. The first game was tough, but there was clear improvement in the second. We will continue working as a team and give our best going forward.”

In the girls’ category, Light Secondary School and Sacred Heart Secondary School—Gulu are set to contest a four-match series, further broadening participation in cricket’s debut appearance.

Cricket features among several demonstration disciplines at this year’s Ball Games II, alongside Kho Kho, Pickleball, Darts, and Golf—signalling USSSA’s intent to diversify its sporting programme and nurture emerging talent across a wider competitive spectrum.
