History was rewritten on Saturday, 6th June 2026, at Muteesa II Wankulukuku Stadium as Mmamba Kakoboza secured their first-ever Bika Bya Baganda Football Shield, edging three-time champions Nkima 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout after a goalless stalemate in regulation time.
The triumph marked a defining milestone for the clan, ending decades of near-misses in a competition that has been contested since 1950. Goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya emerged as the central figure in the shootout drama, producing two crucial saves to deny Nkima’s Edgar William Katumba and another effort. Despite striking the post with his own penalty, Kigonya’s heroics proved decisive.
Mmamba Kakoboza converted through Dissan Galiwango, captain Ezikiel Duncan Sseninde, Nicholas Kabonge and Samuel Nsubuga, while Nkima found the net via Abdallah Ssentongo, Allan Jjumba and skipper Ssekitoleko.
Kabonge’s influence across the tournament earned him the Most Valuable Player accolade, underlining his instrumental role in the clan’s historic campaign. Elsewhere, Nelson Senkatuka of Mbogo finished as the competition’s top scorer, while Nkima’s Sulaiman Kibalama was recognised as the best goalkeeper.
“This victory means everything to the Mmamba Kakoboza clan. It is our first shield after years of perseverance,” captain Sseninde remarked, paying tribute to players, coaches and stakeholders who powered the breakthrough.
Earlier in the competition, Mmamba Kakoboza booked their place in the final with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kkobe, while Nkima overcame Ngo by a similar margin in the semi-finals. Kkobe went on to secure third place with a 1-0 win against Ngo.
Beyond football, the 2026 edition showcased a diverse sporting programme, including competitions in netball, chess, scrabble (in Luganda), and football categories for veterans above 30 and 40 years.
In netball, Nte also etched their name into the history books, clinching their maiden shield with a hard-fought 48-47 victory over Mmamba Gabunga in a gripping final. The semi-finals had seen Nte defeat Nnyonnyi Nnyange 46-42, while Mmamba overcame Ngabi Nsamba 53-37.
The closing ceremony was graced by the Katikkiro, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, who commended the participating clans and organisers, particularly the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts led by Owek. Robert Serwanga Salongo, for delivering a well-coordinated tournament.
Backed by Airtel Uganda Limited as the main sponsor, the Bika Bya Baganda sports tournament once again reaffirmed its cultural and sporting significance, blending heritage with competitive excellence.
Mmamba Kakoboza now join a distinguished roll of honour, becoming the latest custodians of a trophy steeped in Buganda’s rich sporting tradition—an achievement that will resonate across the clans for years to come.
