Kampala, Uganda – The 22nd Edition of the Uganda International Badminton Challenge was officially launched this morning at Mandela Group of Companies’ headquarters on 6th Street, Industrial Area.
The championship, one of the most anticipated events in the region’s badminton calendar, is set to take place from Thursday, the 18th of February, to Sunday, the 22nd, at the renowned Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
This year’s competition will feature a highly competitive line-up, with five major categories: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
The total prize pool for the tournament stands at a whopping $20,000, with both singles and doubles players vying for a chance to secure a portion of the prize money.
In singles, prizes will be awarded from the quarter-finals onwards, with the winner taking home a substantial sum. Meanwhile, the winning pair in the doubles category will split $1,600.
Olympic Dream: A Chance to Earn 4000 Points
In addition to the financial rewards, the Uganda International Badminton Challenge offers a significant incentive for players aiming to qualify for the Olympics.
With a hefty 4,000 points up for grabs for category winners, this tournament represents a vital opportunity for both emerging and established players to enhance their rankings.
A Global Stage
The event has attracted a record turnout, with 256 foreign players from 40 countries, alongside 59 local players from Uganda, making for a highly competitive field.
Among the Ugandan contenders are rising stars Shamika Fadilah Mohammad Rafi and Tracy Naluwooza, who have garnered significant attention after their successful performance at the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Gaborone, Botswana.
Fadilah bagged a gold medal in the Women’s Singles while her doubles partner, Tracy, helped secure a bronze in the Women’s Doubles event.
Simon Mugabi, CEO of the Uganda Badminton Association, expressed his excitement for the tournament, noting its importance for players in the lead-up to the Olympic Games.
“This tournament provides our athletes with a platform to gain critical points towards Olympic qualification.
The 4,000 points available in each category are invaluable for players striving to make their mark on the international stage.”
Gladys Mbabazi one of Uganda’s finest expressed rediness ahead of the Championshipand said, “We have been preparing for a long time. Fresh from the All Africa Badminton Senior championship in Botswana gives us a good shape to compete.”
