The third edition of the East African Inter-Forces Judo Championship is set to begin tomorrow at Old Kampala Arena.
The two-day regional meet is expected to climax on Sunday.
Security forces from Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, and DR Congo, have joined hosts Uganda with nine teams confirmed for action.
The championship, whose first and second editions have previously been held won by Burundi and Tanzania by each respective host, aims to strengthen collaboration among the region’s security agencies, with over 80 competitors already in the country. “The major objective is unity among forces,” said Capt. Musiitwa Herbert, chairman of the organising committee and president of the Uganda Judo Association.
“We are ready to deliver a successful championship.”
Athletes, including Happy Phiona, a police constable representing Uganda, are eager to challenge for medals.
“This is the third time we’re playing this tournament and this time it’s Uganda hosting. As players, we’re well set and ready to challenge for medals,” she said.
Inspector of Police Peter Malavu, manager of the Uganda Police Judo Club, highlighted the wider significance of the championship.
“These games bring together a well-working relationship among the countries that make up the East Africa region. It is more than competition—it’s about cooperation,” Malavu noted.
The tournament, sponsored by Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), will reward participants with medals, trophies, accolades, and certificates across various categories.
With teams expressing confidence and excitement ahead of the weekend battles on the mat, Uganda will be hoping to leverage home advantage as they seek to break the trend of hosts winning the championship—this time for themselves.
