In a significant stride towards enhancing player welfare and working conditions, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström met with players’ unions from across the globe in Rabat, Morocco, on the eve of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2025 final.
The meeting, attended by representatives from 30 players’ unions, marked a pivotal moment in the organization’s commitment to improving football for the future.
A Collective Voice for Players
“We remain committed to further enhancing player welfare and working conditions across the world by implementing concrete and meaningful measures,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The meeting culminated in the formalization of the FIFA Professional Players Consultation Forum, a group dedicated to advancing the collective interests of professional players worldwide.
Key Initiatives for Player Welfare
The meeting yielded several key initiatives, including:
– Player Rest and Recovery*: FIFA and players’ unions agreed on principles for rest periods, including 72 hours between matches and 21 days between seasons.
– FIFA Fund for Professional Players: A $20 million fund will be established to support players affected by financial difficulties faced by their clubs.
– Representation and Support: Players’ unions will be included in FIFA committees, and FIFA will provide development support for players’ unions.
A New Era of Collaboration
The meeting marked the beginning of a new era of collaboration between FIFA and players’ unions.
“FIFA wants to work with all those genuinely interested in progress and respectful dialogue,” said President Infantino.
Further meetings are scheduled to take place in the coming months, solidifying this commitment to progress.
