In a thrilling Uganda Premier League encounter, NEC FC secured a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Express FC at Lugogo, keeping their title aspirations alive.

The win, which marked NEC’s 50th game in the league, was fueled by a dominant performance from Hussein Mbalangu’s side.

The hosts got off to a flying start, with veteran midfielder Muzamir Mutyaba scoring a powerful goal in the fourth minute.

Mutyaba’s impressive shot beat Express goalkeeper Micheal Kagiri, setting the tone for NEC’s commanding display.

Paul Mucureezi doubled NEC’s lead in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a well-delivered cross from Marvin Kavuma. Despite opportunities to extend their lead, NEC were wasteful in the first half, with Shamir Kimwero and Kavuma’s efforts being thwarted by Kagiri.

Express’s chances were limited in the first half, with striker Sam Ssenyonjo being denied by NEC’s outstanding goalkeeper Hannington Sebwalunyo on two occasions.

The second half saw NEC continue to press for more goals, and their persistence paid off when substitute Allan Mugalu scored, receiving a cut-back pass from Mucureezi.

Express showed improvement in the second half, with John Asiimwe’s effort being kept out, but their hopes were dashed when substitute Conrad Ssenjogera scored a consolation goal with ten minutes to play.

The win propelled NEC to 47 points, just two points behind league leaders Vipers, who face SC Villa on Saturday.

Express FC, on the other hand, suffered their third consecutive defeat, remaining in seventh position with 28 points.

The next challenge for NEC is a visit to UPDF FC at Bombo, while Express FC travels to face Maroons on Thursday, 5th.
