Today, the 2nd of April 2024 at Lazio Restaurant Kololo, Fortebet in conjunction with Real Stars Sports Agency have awarded Lydia Namabiro, Hakim Mutebi and two others for their March excellence.
As it’s their normal to recognize the best athletes in different categories, they recognized four sports disciplines which includes; rugby, weightlifting, football and badminton.
In rugby category, Namabiro Lydia beat off the competition from Peace Lekuru and Norbert Okeny to win the March Accolade.
Namabiro helped the Lady Rugby Cranes Sevens to finish fourth in the third round of the HSBC Challengers Series in Montevideo with a total of 4 tries.
In Accra, Ghana, she was a star player for Uganda to secure a Gold on her first appearance in the games and the games at large. Namabiro scored 6 tries for the Lady Rugby Cranes with woman of the tournament performance.
In the Badminton sport, there were also three nominees, that is; Husina Kobugabe,Gladys Mbabazi and Fadilah Shamika. Husina Kobugabe emerged the winner.
The Ndejje University student and Gladys Mbabazi teamed in the women’s double to beat Algeria’s duo two sets straight to clinch Uganda’s only gold for badminton in All Africa Games.
She also went on to win a silver medal in singles after losing a final to South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz 2-1.
SC Villa and St Mary’s Boarding School Kitende’s midfielder Hakim Mutebi emerged the winner in the football discipline after beating off the challenge from U20 Queen Cranes forward, Catherine Nagadya and Usama Arafat of U20 and KCCA.
The midfielder lifted the Uganda Hippos where it always mattered most, he scored a goal in Uganda’s historical comeback against Congo.
Uganda finished second with Silver in the games after losing to old foes Ghana 1-0 in the final.
Finally, Davis Niyoyita won the other two nominees, Lydia Nakidde and Steven Ojede in the weight lifting sport.
Davis, a student at Kakungulu Memorial School Kibuli won three medals for Uganda in two silvers and a bronze.
The Silver came from Clean and Jerk carrying 120 kg in 55kg category and bronze from snatch with a weight of 90kg.
The second silver came from his second position over-all behind Madagascars Eric Adrian.
